This New Year, I prepared traditional Japanese dishes with my sister.

We went grocery shopping at a Japanese supermarket to buy authentic ingredients.
（私たちは本格的な食材を買うために、日本のスーパーへ買い物に行きました。）
They had a selection of imported New Year’s delicacies such as datemaki, kamaboko, kuromame, and more!
（店内には伊達巻、かまぼこ、黒豆など、お正月のご馳走が日本から輸入されていました！）
I tried datemaki for the first time.
（私は初めて伊達巻を食べました。）
My American friend joined us for dinner and also gave it a try.
（アメリカ人の友達も夕食に参加し、伊達巻に挑戦しました。）
However, she said it tasted like wet bread.
（しかし、彼女は「濡れたパンみたいな味がする」と言っていました。）
Maybe freshly made datemaki in Japan tastes much better.
（やっぱり日本で作りたての伊達巻の方が美味しいのかもしれません。）
But everyone agreed that the kuromame was delicious.

The highlights of our meal were the temaki sushi and ozoni!
（一番のごちそうは、手巻き寿司とお雑煮でした！）
We prepared the sushi rice from scratch and bought fresh tuna, salmon, and hamachi for sashimi.
（寿司飯を一から作り、新鮮なマグロ、サーモン、ハマチの刺身を購入しました。）
Even the rice was excellent.

If you visit a Japanese supermarket, you can find high-quality rice imported from Japan.
（日系のスーパーに行けば、日本から輸入された高品質なお米を手に入れることができます。）
Also, Japanese rice like Koshihikari are grown in California, thanks to its thriving agricultural industry.
（さらに、カリフォルニアは農業が盛んなため、コシヒカリなどの日本米も栽培されています。）
Japanese ingredients can be hard to find in most parts of the U.S, but they are readily available in areas with large Asian communities, such as San Jose.
（アメリカのほとんどの地域では日本の食材を見つけるのが難しいですが、サンノゼのようにアジア系の住民が多い都市では簡単に手に入ります。）

「For the first time」は、「初めて～する」という意味で、新しい経験について話すときに使われます。

「thanks to」は、何かや誰かのおかげで良いことがあった時や、皮肉っぽく「〜のせいで」という意味でも使えます。
